Spotlight / PMOIS
The Pest Management Operations Information System (PMOIS) is a data
application that was originally conceived by various stakeholders in the forest
sector to address the expanding Bark Beetle epidemic in British Columbia.
Formerly a desktop tool running under MS Access™, PMOIS has been revamped to
become a web application that is utilized across the Province and is used as an
analysis and treatment tool for the large array of pests that affect forest
health across the Province.
The strength of the PMOIS application lies in its ability to share
information between the 200 plus individual users from various District Defined
Forest Area Management (DFAM) groups across the Province of British Columbia. In
the past, Ministry of Forest officials, industry partners, and field contractors
had a difficult time reporting standardized results for Pine Beetle probes
undertaken within their respective areas of management. The lack of a
centralized platform for data collection coupled with the absence of
standardized data formats and data collection criteria greatly hindered the
ability of organizations to monitor the spread of the Pine Beetle and numerous
other forest pests. With the implementation of an updated POMIS, new management
algorithms combined with streamlined processing written in ASP.NET have created
a Common Centralized Data Solution (CCDS). As a CCDS, PMOIS is now capable of
modifying and sharing data across DFAM's, consulting firms, individuals, and
other organizations.
Key features of this application include:
- Roles based user management
- Integration with reporting services
- Integration with costing software
- The ability to interface with handheld data collection units
